(THE SPIRITUAL CINEMA OF MALAYSIA: TRADITION, TRANSCENDENCE & SELF-DISCOVERY)

概要：With the wayang kulit (Malaysian shadow play), the dalang (master puppeteer) has entertained audiences of bygone days with his stories that were told through shadow images. At the same time, he endeavoured to subtly impart knowledge of the Higher Self and its conflict with the Shadow Archetype. This storytelling tradition found its way onto the cinema screen in Malaysia in the films of P. Ramlee, a legendary actor, writer, director and musician of the early 1950s, who was himself predisposed to mysticism. This spiritual aspect and questions related to it can also be seen in contemporary Malaysian cinema in the works of a few directors such as Yasmin Ahmad, U-Wei Hajisaari, Dain Said and Shanjhey Perumal. This visual presentation will look at selected films from the 1950s and up to the present day to see how these filmmakers have commented on the loss of traditional values and spirituality that were once an integral part of Malaysian society.
