日本語と英語、文化の背景の違いを越えて

 

日本語と英語では、「Thank you」と「ありがとう」のように語彙や背景が異なります。たとえば日本語の「いただきます」には感謝や謙譲の文化が宿りますが、英語圏では「Let’s eat」という直接的な表現になります。こうした文化的背景を踏まえ、日本文化を正確に伝える記事を英語で執筆していますが、興味深いことに、それらの記事は日本人にとっても自国文化を再発見しやすい内容となっています。

 

さらに英語版ブログには「Translate」機能を搭載し、世界104か国語への自動変換が可能。文化や歴史の知識を国境や言語の壁を越えて共有できる新しい試みです。

A Popular Japanese History Blog with 30,000 Daily Visitors Launches English Edition

Expanding Its Reach with 104-Language Support

 

Since its launch in 2008, the Japanese history blog Zenkoh’s Hitorigoto (“Zenkoh’s Soliloquy”), authored by Zenkoh Onagi, has covered a wide range of topics from ancient to modern Japanese history. At its peak, the site attracted up to 30,000 visitors in a single day and has now published approximately 6,000 articles. Its readership spans generations and regions, making it one of Japan’s most recognized independent history blogs.

 

Now, the blog takes a new step forward with the launch of its English-language edition, Discover the Joy of Learning (https://bushido.hjrc.jp/). This new platform introduces Japanese culture, history, social structure, Bushidō, and cross-cultural insights to English-speaking audiences in an accessible and engaging way. The English edition is updated daily and already features 23 published articles.

 

Bridging Cultural Gaps Between Japanese and English

 

Japanese and English differ not only in vocabulary but also in cultural context. For example, the Japanese phrase itadakimasu expresses gratitude and humility before a meal, whereas the closest English equivalent might be the straightforward “Let’s eat.” With these cultural nuances in mind, articles are written in English to faithfully convey the essence of Japanese traditions. Interestingly, this process has also made the content easier for Japanese readers to rediscover their own culture from a fresh perspective.

 

The English blog also includes a “Translate” function, enabling automatic conversion into 104 different languages. This innovative feature allows knowledge of culture and history to be shared across national and linguistic boundaries.

Zenkoh Onagi – also known as “Nezu-san”

National History Educator / Classical Literature Researcher

 

Through the study of works such as the Kojiki and Manyoshu, as well as modern and contemporary history, Onagi deciphers “the form of Japan as a nation” and conveys the ideal of Shirasu-kuni—a system of governance based not on control, but on compassion. In addition to his YouTube channel “Wa Juku” and his Japanese-language blog Zenkoh’s Hitorigoto, he has authored numerous books that reignite pride in being Japanese and quietly answer the question, “Why was I born in Japan?”
